Provider Approval Exam (Provider Knowledge Assessment): Sample Questions and How to Prepare
If you are applying to become an approved provider in Australia, you have probably heard about the "provider approval exam" and felt a knot in your stomach. The good news: it is more manageable than it sounds, once you understand what it actually is.

1, What is the provider approval exam?
Its official name is the knowledge assessment, and it forms part of the Provider Knowledge Assessment process under the National Law. Most people just call it the provider approval exam. Whatever you call it, the purpose is simple. As part of assessing your application, your state or territory regulatory authority may require you to complete a knowledge assessment, an interview, or both, to check that you understand your legal responsibilities as an approved provider.
2, What the provider approval exam covers?
The Provider Knowledge Assessment focuses on the National Law and Regulations, the rules you must understand and follow as an approved provider. It is run by your state or territory regulatory authority as part of assessing your application, and the questions test whether you genuinely understand your legal responsibilities, and it covers all 7 quality areas.
3, Is the provider approval exam hard?
Yes, and No. It is open book. That sounds reassuring, until you look at the clock. You get 46 questions in 75 minutes, about 98 seconds each. For anything you have to look up, that is barely enough time to read the question and find the right section, let alone think it through. So open book does not mean easy. If you do not already know your way around the legislation, you spend the whole time hunting, and the clock beats you. The people who pass comfortably are not the ones who have memorised everything. They are the ones who know the exam points and can search quickly and accurately, using the open book to confirm an answer, not to learn it for the first time.
4, Two practice questions to test yourself.
These practice questions are written by Childcare Ready in the style of the assessment, drawn from the National Law and Regulations. They are not real exam questions, but they reflect the kind of thing you need to know.
Practice Question 1. A serious incident occurs at your service. Under the National Regulations, within what timeframe must you notify the regulatory authority?
A) 6 hours
B) 12 hours
C) A and B, depending on your centre policy
D) 24 hours
Answer: D, within 24 hours of becoming aware of the serious incident, under Regulation 176 of the National Regulations.
This one is a deliberate trap. Your own centre's policy and procedure might require staff to report internally to management within 6 or 12 hours, and that is good practice. But the question asks about the regulation, and the two are not the same. No matter what your internal policy says, your legal obligation to notify the regulatory authority is within 24 hours. Do not let your centre's tighter internal timeframe trick you into the wrong regulatory answer.
Practice Question 2. While a centre based service is operating, what is the minimum first aid requirement?
A) The nominated supervisor must hold a first aid qualification
B) At least one educator with a current approved first aid qualification must be in attendance and immediately available at all times
C) Every educator must hold a current first aid qualification
D) A first aid kit must be on site, but no qualification is required
Answer: B. At least one educator with current approved first aid, anaphylaxis management and emergency asthma management qualifications must be in attendance and immediately available in an emergency, at all times children are being educated and cared for.
In practice, nearly all of the centres require all their educators to hold first aid. That is good practice, and you would be right to run your centre that way. But the question asks what the law requires, and the answer is not "everyone." It is at least one qualified educator, in attendance and immediately available. This is the trap: if you answer from what good centres do, you pick C. If you answer from the regulation, you pick B. Knowing legal requirement is what the assessment is testing, and exactly why preparing properly matters.
